Echoes of the East in the Holy Scripture
Echoes of the East in the Holy Scripture
A Study by Green Guru Dinesh Rawat, Environmentalist, Researcher & Author
Introduction – Was India Mentioned in the Bible?
To many readers of the Bible, the East begins and ends in Babylon or Persia. But a closer look at the Old Testament reveals fascinating clues that point further east—possibly even to India. Through names, trade references, and descriptions of exotic goods, we find footprints of India in sacred verses.
The Land of Ophir – Was It India?
The Bible mentions the land of Ophir multiple times as a source of gold, precious stones, and almug trees. King Solomon’s ships, in partnership with King Hiram, brought treasures from Ophir every three years. Many historians and linguists believe Ophir could be the ancient port on India’s western coast—possibly Sopara (Nala Sopara near Mumbai), or ports in Kerala or Tamil Nadu.
Spices, Sandalwood, and Silk in Biblical Times
The Song of Songs (Song of Solomon) lists nard, saffron, calamus, cinnamon—spices native to India. The Hebrew Bible also mentions ivory, apes, and peacocks—elements India was famous for. These trade goods indicate active exchange between India and the biblical world.
The Names Sheba, Dedan, and Keturah – Indian Tribal Links?
Some genealogies in Genesis and Chronicles mention Sheba, Dedan, and Keturah’s descendants settling in the East. Scholars have proposed connections with early Indian tribes or Dravidian roots, suggesting migration or trade networks between the two ancient civilizations.
Thomas the Apostle and His Indian Mission
Though post-Biblical, it is essential to note that one of Jesus’s closest disciples, Thomas, is believed to have come to India around 52 AD. He established churches in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. This supports a spiritual link between early Christianity and India.
The Wisdom of the East – Seen Through a Biblical Lens
The Book of Job, one of the oldest Biblical texts, declares, ‘Wisdom comes from the East.’ In Jeremiah and Ezekiel, references to Eastern sages and magi appear frequently. It shows reverence for ancient Eastern wisdom—possibly including India.
Why This Matters Today
Recognizing India’s presence in the Bible is not about rewriting religion. It is about reclaiming lost connections. India was not isolated from the ancient world—it was a source of wisdom, wealth, and spiritual insights that shaped global traditions.
